Chief of Malindi village

Elia Msumba, 34, lives in Malindi, Tanzania.
Elia was born to a family of farmers and teachers and is definitely an unusual figure in the landscape of the Malindi people. He has a bachelors degree from one of the main universities in Tanzania in urban development, and has returned to his hometown, despite being able to make a good living in the business world. Elia wanted to help improve education in the area so that the village children could rise into education and management positions.

He established a private school where English is taught and spoken in small classes and with proper infrastructure - electricity, water, hot meal for each student and rain and wind protected classes. Elia's school is one of the best in Tanzania and is attended by students from all over the country. Due to the high tuition of $ 22 a month, most families in the region cannot afford this education. Elia ran for the post of head of the Malindi subdivision in order to eradicate the governmental corruption that had existed for years and impaired the subdivision's ability to grow, advance and direct funds to education and infrastructure.

He was elected democratically by the great majority and is in position for a year and a half now. This year the entire subdivision is in the process of significant improvement in many areas. Elia’s dream is that all schools in the district will be as good as his school and free of charge.

אליה בן למשפחת חקלאים ומורים והוא בהחלט דמות חריגה בנוף של אנשי מלינדי. למד באחת הערים הגדולות בטנזניה תואר בפיתוח עירוני וחזר לכפר הולדתו, על אף היכולת להתפרנס היטב בעולם העסקי בערים הגדולות במדינה. על מנת לשפר את החינוך באזור כדי שילדי הכפר יוכלו לגדול לתפקידי חינוך וניהול כפי שהוא הצליח לעשות, אליה הקים בית ספר פרטי בו מלמדים ומדברים באנגלית, בכיתות קטנות ועם תשתיות ראויות – חשמל, מים, ארוחה חמה לכל תלמיד וכיתות מוגנות מגשמים ורוחות. בית הספר של אליה הוא מהטובים בטנזניה ומגיעים אליו תלמידים מכל רחבי המדינה אך בגלל שעולה 22$ בחודש מרבית משפחות האזור לא יכולות לממן את ההשכלה בו. אליה התמודד לתפקיד ראש נפת מלינדי על מנת למגר את השחיתות השלטונית שהייתה קיימת במשך שנים ופגעה ביכולת הנפה לצמוח, להתקדם ולנתב כספים לחינוך ותשתיות. הוא נבחר בהצבעה דמוקרטית ברוב מוחץ ונכנס לתפקידו לפני שנה. בשנה זו הנפה כולה בתהליך שיפור משמעותיים בתחומים רבים. חלומו של אליה הוא שכל בתי הספר בנפה יהיו כמו שלו ושהלימודים בהם יהיו בחינם.
